VESTARALAND (Westerly Land), Öxarfjörður (Axe Fjord district)

The farmer at VESTARALAND participates in the following national initiatives and projects:

Quality managed sheep farming (Gæðastýrð sauðfjárræktun)
Farmers cultivate the land (Bændur græða landið)
Reclamation under the auspices of the Land-remidy fund (Uppgræðsla á vegum Landabótasjóðs)

Sveinbjörn has pursued farming in VESTARALAND (Westerly Land) since 1982.

In 1922 the property of VESTARALAND was split into two parts of equal size, VESTARALAND I and II, a splitting that has persisted throughout the years. A substantial sheep farming has been operated on both farms through the years and during a period, one of the two farmers, Kristján Jónsson, kept the highest number of sheeps in the district of ÖXARFJÖRÐUR (Axe Fjord district). However, and due to risks represented by the canyons of the glacial river JÖKULSÁ Á FJÖLLUM (Glacial Mountain River), farming of sheeps in this area is quite problematic, with many examples of sheeps being driven off the high cliffs in bad weathers and perishing in the canyon.

Fjallalamb hf. (Mountain Lamb Ltd.) has been operating since year 1990. Our expertise is processing of lamb meat, from slaughtering to final consumer products. We also collaborate closely with the farmers in fulfiling regulations on quality managed sheep farming. Currently, over 90% of our products are attached to these regulations.

Fjallalamb hf. (Mountain Lamb Ltd.) is a member of the national slaughtering licencee association.

Around 20 employees are engaged at Fjallalamb hf. (Mountain Lamb Ltd.) all year around, but increasing up to 50-60 people during the slaughtering season through September and October each year.

Saga Fjallalambs

The story of Fjallalamb hf. (Mountain Lamb Ltd.).

Fjallalamb hf. was established in 1990 and the majority of its 130 shareholders is in some way or another related to the operation. Farmers in the county of NORÐUR-ÞINGEYJARSÝSLSA and their associations are amongst the largest shareholders which also counts employee and other individuals. All producers and depositors of lambs and sheeps in the area own their share in the company and and solidarity prevails on its operation in the area. To create a unique position for Fjallalamb´s products on the market based on the quality of natural resources offered by the county of NORÐUR-ÞINGEYJARSÝSLSA has directed the course of the association from the beginning. Also the independancy from but good business relationships with other slaughtering licencee associations to ensure economic feasibility and the necessary collaboration within the industry as a whole.

It is the steadfast will of Fjallalamb´s shareholders to create a unique position for all Fjallalamb´s products on the market based on the quality of natural resources offered by the county of NORÐUR-ÞINGEYJARSÝSLSA, including quality of the land and geographical isolation from common sheep diseases.
